liza's story
“In every choice, there is an exchange. I have no regrets.
And in my journey, I will never forget to trust the Lord because He is always there for me no matter what happens.”
Liza Tubeza was 20 years old and in her first year of college when she had her first child, and her second was born one year later.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I was filled with mixed emotions. As a first time mum, I felt worried about what kind of life I would be able to give my children, because I wasn’t able to finish school. I didn’t have a permanent job to provide for their needs. To be honest, I was not yet ready to be a mother,” Liza candidly shares.
Until that time, Liza had been working while studying, in the hopes of finishing her studies and being able to provide her family with a better life.
“But because of what happened, all of my sacrifices came to nothing, and that made me very sad,” she remembers.
Two years ago, Liza decided to come to Singapore to work as a foreign domestic worker (FDW). She is currently with a family who attends WEFC. It was a very hard decision for her to make, but her family’s poverty and needs drove her to make this choice for them.
“Actually, when I was praying about whether to come to Singapore, my own mother was very worried for me, because she had heard a lot of news reports about FDW being abused or even killed by their employers. But I asked God if I should go, and prayed that He would open the door for me to go if it was His plan for me. So when there was an opportunity to go, I decided to trust Him and do it.”

Liza also remembers, “The moment I waved goodbye to my daughters… it was so hard. I saw them crying while saying goodbye, and they were asking, ‘Mama, where are you going?’ God knows that I didn’t want to leave them, but I had no choice but to hide my pain and go.”
Liza prays that her daughters will understand why she has to go far away to work in order to give them a better future.
“Over here, it is really not easy to be a foreigner. You need to fight the loneliness. For the sake of my family, I choose to sacrifice my own happiness so that I can provide them with a better life. But sometimes I feel lonely, because I have no one to lean on,” Liza shares.
In the beginning, it was especially tough, as she was filled with sadness and worry for her children. She also could not afford a phone at the time. Now, she owns a mobile phone which now allows her to have rare but precious conversations with her daughters.
“Now, I am happier working here. I am thankful that I can wake up every day, and that God gives me the strength to face every challenge in my life. I am also thankful for the opportunity to work abroad in this role, and to have an employer who is kind and understanding, and a family that loves and cares about my kids. God has given me a healthy body and strong mind to stay positive despite the trials of life, and I want to continue to trust in His plan for me.”
For Liza, her family has always been her greatest source of motivation.
“Having my two daughters is one of the happiest blessings in my life. They complete me. Now I have this chance to show my family that I am a mother who will never give up no matter what happens. My family has taught me the meaning of unconditional love, patience, sacrifice and perseverance, and I pray that I can give them a better and brighter future. I am proud that, because of my diligence and perseverance, I am able to keep my family alive. In every choice, there is an exchange. I have no regrets. And in my journey, I will never forget to trust the Lord because He is always there for me no matter what happens.”
